About the Author, Steve Burke — A Brief Bio

I grew up in the Dorchester section of Boston and attended Boston Latin School during school desegregation. Like every kid living in Boston in the 70’s, I saw the city being torn apart by the crisis. It touched every family I knew. In certain communities, like South Boston, Roxbury and Charlestown, the effects of busing were especially strong. In some cases, devastating.

My interest in writing led me to start writing groups in Boston, and later Seattle, where I now live. While earning my MFA in creative writing at Columbia University, I turned back to those early years in Boston for inspiration. My thesis project was a novel that tapped into the influences that shaped me—what it means to grow up in a particular place at a particular time.
